Single Cell Protein for Foods and Feeds: A Review of Trends

Introduction: Predictions on the world’s population in next few decades suggest that global demand for animal-derived proteins may not be met if current conventional agriculture approaches are used. One promising solution to this complex crisis lies use of single-cell (SCP). SCP refers edible biomass unicellular microorganisms and can developed as animal feeds or human foods. This paper provides a detailed overview research towards production utilisation SCPs trends within field. Study Design: A bibliometric based study was conducted 425 articles collected from Web Science database, analysing most cited papers using VOSviewer software, contributing authors, affiliations country origin. Research publications started 1961 has grown steadily over years. Discussion: Emerging topics focused improved fungal strains, composition characteristics type substrates used, industrial processes waste production, which serves dual purpose mitigating cost associated with disposal valuable product.
